New Habits Start Hard

This is the first entry to the blog. I am challenged to pick a theme for this blog…some kind of overriding content to interest, stimulate, challenge and/or repulse regular visitors with the hopes of making them more regular visitors. Could I become the next “Mini msft,” writing scandalous critiques of my workplace, driving upper management nuts and rallying my co-workers around the “our company needs to change” mantra? Wait…my name is on this thing, that won’t work.

Next challenge, how the hell am I going to manage to regularly update and provide entries to this thing? Our last family website went about 2 years without an edit or new photograph. It’s like the old adage of the painter’s house; it’s the last to be painted. Honestly, the last thing I want to do after staring at a computer screen all day designing other people web experiences is to sit in front of a computer screen designing my own. That said, I have tried as hard as possible to make this site easily editable. From using MovableType for this blog to the use of Web Album Generator for creating the photo pages, I tried to build a site that will allow quick and easy edits of both copy and photographs. Now to make it a habit to update this blog more that once a year.

Now, about the photographs. It goes against every aesthetic bone in my body to be putting up rather poorly shot and poor quality photographs for the world to see. We are terrible when it comes to photographs, generally purchasing some crap disposable camera at the last minute just so we have some record of family events. Fortunately, we are about to buy a better camera that should help on this front. Still, I must remind myself that aside from a select few of my artist and photographer buddies who are going to, be it privately or to my face, wonder what the hell is wrong with me for posting half-rate quality photos, most family and friends who live far away will appreciate regularly updated photos.

So back to the overriding theme of this blog. I guess the prevailing theme is that there is no theme but rather a stream of conscious on whatever topic actually allows me to keep a habit of actually writing in this thing.
